강연개요:
Saul, J. M. presents a puzzle about substitutivity of co-referential names. She holds in defense of the Millian view of proper names against the Fregena view that substitution of ‘Clark Kent’ and ‘Superman’, for example, can lead to change in truth-value even for “simple sentences”, which do not involve intensional contexts. I will discuss problems with this objection to the Fregean view and argue that her pragmatic explanation she offers in the puzzle conflicts with the Millian view because it assumes failure of substitutivity of proper names in some contexts.
